An Olympian army officer is ambushed and lost in the mountains after valiant action in the 1962 India–China war. The decorated war hero makes an incredible comeback and goes on to win an Olympic gold.
Amidst a raging insurgency in Kashmir in 2006, a militant gives up terrorism for love. His surrender leads to an unlikely friendship with an army officer, who gives him a second chance at life.
An Indian soldier in World War II defies the odds. He cheats death on land and sea on several occasions in a scintillating series of captures and escapes. His unconquerable spirit shines through this remarkable journey.
These are the fascinating stories from battlefields near and far that have been lost and forgotten, rarely recorded for the history books. Spanning over a century of conflicts – from the ravaged terrains of Italy and France during the World Wars to the icy summits of north India’s borderlands and to Indian cities gripped by terror attacks – this book excavates and presents hidden stories from India’s military past. Compiled from personal interviews and a wealth of archival material, this collection is plotted alongside the arc of India’s journey in the last hundred years.
Surprising and heart-rending, these are tales of undaunted courage, of loyalty and sacrifices made in the cauldron of war. A vivid and compelling book, Camouflaged reminds us that in the end, hope triumphs over despair.
